Land and/or Seascapes- Third Grade

 Land and/or Seascapes

Third graders learned about creating the illusion of depth on a 2D picture plane.  First students viewed several famous works of art to identify foreground, middle ground and background as well as the artist’s tricks, or techniques, to create depth.  These include relative size (making things closer to the viewer larger), placement on the picture plane (objects closer to the viewer tend to be placed lower on the picture plane), and the use of overlapping. 

Then students created sketches of a seascape or landscape to practice using these skills in original works.  Finally students drew the land or seascape using glue on dark colored paper.  When the glue dried we moved on to learning about warm and cool colors as well as blending with chalk pastels.  The results are amazing!  Way to go third graders!
Unfortunately, my photos do not do these pieces justice.  These are really gorgeous!

 That's Mrs. Gustafson riding the wave and her daughters enjoying the surf!  This artist wanted to include her third grade teacher on the big wave because she knows she is a surfer.  How sweet is that!
